The dispute was sparked after a 3% increase was rejected by the institution’s Academics’ Union (AU), which represents the majority of academic staff at the institution. Members of the union have demanded a 7.1% increase which is inflation related.

The imminent strike by the academic staff of UCT has been put on hold after an engagement at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) between the union and UCT management on Tuesday 24 January 2023.

Professor Kelley Moult, the Lead Negotiator for the Academic Union, believes that there is a willingness from both sides to resolve the current dispute, but stresses that they are focused on protecting the interests of the member of the union.

After the meeting, the strike was put on hold for the time being and the union will reassess after a verbal offer is made by UCT management.

UCT vice-chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, says that an ongoing process aimed at resolving the matter is in place.
