Limpopo is home to the University of Limpopo and the University of Venda. There have, however, been requests for more stand-alone universities in the province.

These requests led to a number of deliberations and negotiations, which have now resulted in the announcement of a new Tshwane University of Technology campus, which will open in the Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo.

House of Traditional Leaders Limpopo chair, Hosi Pheni Ngobe has confirmed that the Teachers College of Education facility that was closed, will be used as the new campus of this university of technology.

TUT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tinyiko Maluleke said:

The Department of Higher Education and Training ought to be given credit for seeing it fit to extend technology education to a part of the country that does not have access to technology education at all.

The area is best known for being rich in agriculture and nature conservation, making it ideal to offer programmes that will provide the youth with skills that will help them participate in these industries.

It is said that this envisaged facility will focus particularly on different fields of Engineering, Information Communication Technology and also Applied Sciences, as well as general qualifications.

It is for this reason that TUT has confirmed that lecturers will also be upskilled in the technological and scientific aspect of their career, so that their teaching style and content is innovative and aligned with what the institution aims to achieve in this new facility.

The university of technology will also run short-learning courses local industry that will benefit the local industries.
