Education Minister Announces 2022 Matric Results With 80.1% Pass Rate

After weeks and weeks of waiting, the day has finally come for matric results for 2022 to be announced and released. The evening of Thursday, 19 January 2023, sees the Minister of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Angie Motshekga, announce the 2022 matric results for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

Education Minister Announces 2022 Matric Results With 80.1% Pass Rate

The national Matric pass rate for 2022 achieved is 80.1%. This is a 3.7% improvement since last year with a 4.1% increase in Bachelor passes.

The country also saw 197 357 diploma passes, 108 159 higher certificate passes and 117 NSC endorsements.

The grade 12s of 2022 are the grade 10s of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, with DBE Deputy Minister, Reginah Mhaule, saying, “This class was doubly affected where they had to undergo a trimmed curriculum”.

Motshekga went on to say that all provinces have improved in their results. The matric pass rates for each province are as follows:

  • Western Cape: 81.4%
  • Gauteng: 84.4%
  • Limpopo: 72.1%
  • Eastern Cape: 77.3%
  • Kwazulu-Natal: 83%
  • North West: 79.8%
  • Northern Cape: 74.2%
  • Mpumalanga: 76.8%
  • Free State: 88.5%

922 034 candidates sat down for this NSC examination period, a 2.6% increase from last year. 1 132 learners with special needs enrolled for the National Senior Certificate for 2022.

The Class of 2022 will then be able to collect their statement of results from their exam centres on 20 January 2023 from 7am.
