Free State Leads in Matric Pass Rate For Third Consecutive Year

For the third consecutive year, the Free State has been the highest contributor to the country’s matric pass rate. But upon closer observation, the province faces strong competition from Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.

During the much-anticipated release of the 2021 matric results on Thursday, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga revealed that the Free State is the highest achieving province with an 85.7% pass rate.

However, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal have more matriculants who attained a Bachelor’s degree entry-level pass and will thus be eligible for a Bachelors degree program at universities.

Limpopo appears to have been the only province that achieved a pass rate lower than 70%, having only managed 66.7% while three other provinces managed to attain pass rates above 80%

Motshekga further stated that despite the Covid-19 pandemic being a resilience test for matriculants throughout the school year, the Class of 2021 were able to achieve an overall pass rate of 76.4% making this a slight 0.2% improvement from that of 2020’s 76.2%.

Free State has been leading the provincial pass rate race for three consecutive years with a 0.6% improvement from 2020.

The province is followed by Gauteng with 82.8%, Western Cape 81.2%, North West 78.2%, KwaZulu-Natal 76.8%, Mpumalanga 73.6%, Eastern Cape 73% and Northern Cape 71.4%.

The NCS results are based on 897 163 candidates who sat for the final exam last year, which is reported to have increased by 23.6% from 2020. making them the largest group in history.
