The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government entity that has been responsible for distributing social grants to millions of South Africans since 2006. Some grant beneficiaries have been misled by a post circulating on social media.
The fake advertisement had mentioned an additional grant, to which the Agency replied and said:
No additional grant type is offered apart from the ones announced by Sassa.
In the fake advert, it is alleged that Sassa will be issuing R700 in the additional grant.
The public has been made aware that the advert is fake and not an official Sassa statement.
The agency offers the following social grants:
- Older person’s grant (old-age pension)
- Child support grant
- Care dependency grant
- Grant in aid (if you live on a social grant but need someone to take care of you)
- War veteran’s grant
- Foster child grant
- Disability grant
After the emergence of the Covid-19 virus, many lives changed and a social grant was introduced to help financially maintain those who were negatively impacted by the lockdown.
The government’s financial support came in the form of the Social Relief Distress (SRD) grant, which has been extended several times since its introduction in 2021 when the National State of Disaster was first introduced.
The most recent extension of the SRD grant, announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, will see the grant remain in place until March 2023.
