The immediate past year didn’t end well for social grant beneficiaries as they were not delivered on time. The government agency has promised its users that everything will proceed as planned in January 2023.

The end of 2022 was a messy year-end for the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), with delayed social grant payments being a major issue that took place between November and December 2022.

For some Sassa grant beneficiaries that solely relied on the government agency’s financial assistance, the end of 2022 was a difficult time for them.

However, the year starts on a good one as SASSA has promised its clients that payments will be on track for the month of January. In an interview, Sassa spokesperson, Moabi Pitsi said:

”We have managed to resolve all of the issues of the November and December payment cycles and we are ready to start payments on 3 January 2023.

In the November 2022 payment cycle, social grant payments were delayed due to technical glitches from the South African Post Office. Postbank picked up skeptical activities on its system, with its goal to protect beneficiaries from card fraud, ATM withdrawals were then halted for the festive season.

Pitsi has recapitulated that issues of the two payment cycles have been put to bed, and 2023 payments for January will be disbursed as per the payment schedule below:

  • OLDER PERSONS GRANT: 03/01/2023
  • DISABILITY GRANTS: 04/01/2023
  • CHILDREN’S GRANTS AND OTHER GRANTS: 05/01/2023

According to Sassa, there is no set payment date for the Sassa Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) grant because it is a temporary grant.

Instead, SRD grant beneficiaries will be notified of their grant payment dates via text message and they also have an option of checking when they can collect their monies on the official SRD grant website.

Beneficiaries may collect their January 2023 social grant payments using three different methods, which include receiving their grant directly into their bank account, via the CashSend option, or using their Sassa cards at retailers.
